Visual Concepts has turned NBA 2K21 into a full-fledged MMORPG with a new mode called The City, available for next-gen versions.
If you didn’t think they couldn’t turn basketball into an MMO, think again. For the next-gen versions of NBA 2K21, Visual Concepts has done just that. Aside from other new features, the new game will have a new online mode called The City.
NBA 2K21: The City
Engadget reports that The City is an online hub world. 2K says this new feature builds upon the franchise hallmark The Neighborhood. If you’ve played an MMORPG, this should be familiar territory.

When you first drop into The City, you’ll start in “Rookieville.” This part is a tutorial area where you get to finish quests. Complete these early tasks before you can enjoy The City fully. Once you leave “Rookieville,” you’ll pick an Affiliation to join. There are four Affiliations: North, South, East, and West. Each of the factions belongs to a City borough. They will also have a mayor.
Keys to The City
At first, Visual Concepts will handpick mayors from the NBA2K community to serve one term. After that, each Affiliation will hold an in-game election for the new mayor. These terms last for six weeks.
If you become a mayor, you can choose your Affiliation’s uniforms, court designs, and more.
Basketball MMORPG
In The City, you can challenge other players to games of HORSE and six-player half-court games. Along the way, you’ll also find NPCs who will give you quests to complete. You’ll notice them because they have an exclamation mark above their heads. Likewise, you’ll also find some in-game stores where you can buy new gear for your character.
Check out The City by grabbing NBA 2K21 for the Xbox Series X/S on November 10 and PS5 on November 12.
